Free Cross-Stitch Patterns: Suzanne's Site Review

Ok, I've become a cross-stitch fanatic.  Admittedly, I've been much more fanatical at finding free patterns and printing them than actually stitching them (individual projects always seem to take me longer than they should), but I've had a lot of fun finding them on the web.  Below are a list of my favorites, with reviews.  I have not included any sites that require registering with the site to access the free patterns, nor have I included sites that require a special cross-stitch viewer to see the patterns.  If you know of a good site that I do not have listed here, please feel free to contact me.  Enjoy the site!

  • Sue's Cross-Stitch Freebie Finder: This is, hands-down, my favorite site.  Sue has put together an alphabetized list of sites with free cross-stitch patterns, and listed the designs available on each site.  The only downside is that the site was last updated in 2002.  All in all, though, I think this one is the best one-stop resources around for free cross-stitch patterns.  nb: sites below this one either are not listed on Sue's page or have major changes (e.g. a new website link) from the information listed on Sue's page.
  • Alita Designs: Very nice patterns, many at quite a challenging level but with some beginner patterns as well.  Patterns include:
Animals: eagle, horse, goldfinch, bluebird, tiger, swan, mallard
Kids: 2 snowman patterns, 2 rabbit patterns, bear, cloud, moon, sun, Santa, lion, pumpkin
Miscellaneous: 13 flowers/fruit patterns, American flag, Latina girl, Valentine heart, red leaf (maple?), Panama AC logo, 2005 Christmas card with bells, Arsenal logo, and Zodiac with all signs
Religious (Christian): 2 Easter patterns, one Christmas ornament, and a Madonna
Marine Life: 2 dolphin patterns, squid (mislabeled "octopus"), whale, fish
Motifs: 10 patterns, mostly edging or corners.
  • Yiota's Xstitch: Quite a few large patterns are available to download, in Zip format (the patterns themselves are in pdf format).  Patterns include: Santa, roses, horses, seated lady having tea, parrot, cat in tree, 3 pink flower patterns, chubby angel, Raphael's Madonna, Geisha, Indian chief, English garden, robins in nest, lady singing with lute, fairy, lovers talking, girl with dog, and window-landscape.
  • Cross Stitching Megat: Several pdf-format patterns free.  These are color patterns, so will require a color printer to print.  A few of the titles are peculiar ("A smelling little bouquet" for a vase of flowers, for example); the site is perhaps Italian? (hard to say, the extension for the site is .biz).  Patterns include: girl riding horse, 3 vase still-life patterns, mountain scene, 2 autumn landscape patterns, Bridge Giuseppe, puppies, forest stream, 3 pink flower patterns, summer garden, landscape, blue motorcycle, mountain village, basket with bouquet, 3 Victorian woman patterns.
  • Mistydreamz: Several pdf-format patterns, all from photographs, available for download as zip files.  Black-and-white patterns, with a nice estimator of how much (percentage of skein) thread you will need for each color.  Patterns include: sailboat, fall tree, bridge, Grand Tetons, Matson's Castle, church window, Halipai Canyon, garden scene, bridge over a deep canyon, Ireland rock, Japan shrine, Japan spring, scales of justice, ducks, Leela Palace garden, hare and forest scene.
